Hello world!

Here it is, the all new seedbom website! This, our first blog post is here to welcome you to our world. To get things started I would just like to tell you a little bit about seedbom and where the idea came from. As well as regular updates to this blog we also have a seedbom facebook and twitter page as well as a mailing list if you would like to know more and keep up to date with our work. Introductions out of the way lets begin………

You might assume that the idea for seedbom came from an interest in gardening combined with a stint in the armed forces but you’d be wrong. You would even be wrong to assume that the idea came from the well established movement of Guerrilla Gardening. “Crazy” you’d say, for those in the know will tell you that the idea of seed bombs and seed bombing has been around for decades, and indeed it has. However believe it or not seedboms were designed back in 2002 in the final year of a design degree, and in a so called ‘temporary’ portacabin of a studio class room the idea of the seedbom was conceived.

seedbom

It wasn’t known as seedbom back then of course, simply the flower grenade and crazy as its sounds it was designed completely independently of any knowledge of guerrilla gardening and conventional seed bombs. It was in fact created as one of the results of a design degree project that explored the use of recycled materials as growing matter that could in turn be moulded into usable and grow-able products. The flower grenade wasn’t even the main project! It just happened completely separately one day and almost out of nowhere, at the time a fun exploratory sideline to the main product outcome (perhaps more about this another time).

The philosophy and ideology behind the work was the idea of creating eco-friendly products that not only did less harm to the environment but also addressed the issue of our (cultures) control of and separation from nature, a philosophy we still work with today. The point of the designs, and that’s an important word ‘point’ was to justify the products existence, not just creating for creating sake but to create for a reason, that reason was and still is to reconnect us with nature. Through its small way seedbom is essentially a fun, playful, innovative and ethical way to connect to nature, simple as that.
